Piedmont Arts brings Richmond Ballet’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ to local schools

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (April 30, 2026) — Piedmont Arts presented four performances of “Sleeping Beauty” by the Richmond Ballet on April 28.

School-wide performances were held at Campbell Court, Drewry Mason, and Rich Acres elementary schools, where around 860 students attended. An additional performance was held in the Piedmont Arts galleries and was attended by 60 children and adults from local daycares, preschools, and homeschool groups.

The performances brought the story of Princess Aurora and Prince Charming to life, taking students into a magical world of fairies, Hop o’ My Thumb, and Red Riding Hood. Students danced along with the performers, asked questions, and learned ballet vocabulary.

Piedmont Arts’ educational outreach programs are presented free of charge to students and schools. The museum reaches nearly 7,000 students each year through its programming. To support the museum’s educational outreach initiatives, donations may be made to the Kay Smith Arts Education Fund at PiedmontArts.org.

This project was supported, in part, by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly.
