Students explore encaustic art at VMFA workshops

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 30, 2026) — Local students participated in encaustic and mixed-media art workshops led by artist Karen Eide Oct. 27-30 at Piedmont Arts.

Around 64 students from Martinsville High School, Magna Vista High School, Carlisle Upper School, and the gifted program at Fieldale-Collinsville Middle School took part in the workshops.

Eide introduced students to the history of encaustic — an art technique that uses hot wax — and demonstrated various painting methods. With her guidance, students then created their own encaustic and mixed-media artworks.

The workshops are part of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Statewide Partner Program, which offers artist-led workshops and lectures throughout the Commonwealth. Piedmont Arts presented the program through its educational outreach program with funding from the For Alison Foundation.

Piedmont Arts’ educational outreach programs are presented free of charge to students and schools. The museum reaches more than 5,000 students per year with its programming.
