Engel brings ‘The Brilliance of Sir Walter Raleigh’ to Piedmont Arts on Nov. 19

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 19, 2026) — Dr. Elliot Engel returns to Piedmont Arts with a lecture titled “Beyond the Muddy Cloak: The Brilliance of Sir Walter Raleigh” on Thursday, Nov. 19. The event begins with an optional dinner at 5:45 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7 p.m.

With his trademark wit and wisdom, Engel brings Raleigh’s extraordinary life into focus, revealing a man whose achievements reached far beyond the famous tale of his muddy cloak. One of the most captivating figures of the Elizabethan age, Raleigh was an ambitious explorer, influential courtier, and key figure in England’s early attempts to establish colonies in North America. Yet he was also a gifted writer of love poetry and a shrewd entrepreneur. Through fascinating insights and engaging storytelling, Engel uncovers the many sides of this remarkable figure, offering a fresh perspective on the man behind the legend.

Engel lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has taught at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina, and Duke University. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from UCLA, where he received the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

The author of 10 books published in England, Japan, Turkey, and the United States, Engel has also reached audiences through a mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens that aired on PBS stations nationwide. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines, and he has lectured throughout the United States and on every continent, including Antarctica. In 2009, he was inducted into England’s Royal Society of Arts in recognition of his academic work and service in promoting the life and legacy of Charles Dickens.

Tickets to the dinner and lecture are $50. Dinner reservations must be made in advance. Tickets to the lecture alone are $25. Tickets can be purchased at Piedmont Arts or online here.
