Dr. Elliot Engel: The Mystery of Robert E. Lee

Dr. Elliot Engel returns to Piedmont Arts with a light and enlightening literary lecture on Robert E. Lee on Thursday, Oct. 2.

By examining the unusual forces that shaped Lee's early life, Engel expertly reveals the man as a son, father, husband and unassuming general. Using anecdotes, analysis and large doses of humor, Engel lends new insight to the life and accomplishments of this historical figure.

Engel lives in Raleigh, N.C., where he has taught at NC State University, University of North Carolina and Duke University. He earned a MA and Ph.D. from UCLA and was awarded that university's Outstanding Teacher Award. He has written ten books published in England, Japan, Turkey and the United States. His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens ran on PBS stations around the country. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines. He has lectured throughout the United States and on all the continents including Antarctica. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in England for his academic work and service in promoting Charles Dickens in 2009.

Guests are invited to attend a dinner with Dr. Engel before the program at 5:45 p.m. Reservations must be made in advance by purchasing tickets below. Tickets to the dinner and lecture are $50.

The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the galleries. Tickets to the lecture alone are $25.
