Transcendence Beyond the Terrestrial Plane

James Stephen Terrell is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores spirituality, memory, identity, and the cosmos.
Inspired by the stained-glass traditions of Black Baptist and Roman Catholic churches, as well as Op Art, color theory, and quilt design, he creates layered collages combining paint, paper, and fabric. His compositions use vivid color, geometric forms, patterns, and lines to create movement and visual vibration.

At the heart of his work is the belief that human existence extends beyond the visible and physical. Ethereal, dreamlike figures emerge within densely patterned compositions, suggesting spiritual and celestial realms that exist alongside our earthly experience. The works function as visual portals, inviting viewers to consider the unseen dimensions of memory, life, and spiritual existence.

Terrell is a native of Washington, D.C. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Howard University, a Master of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, and a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, where he concentrated on theology and the fine arts. His work has been exhibited nationally in museums and galleries in solo and group exhibitions.
