| Binh Danh: In the Eclipse of Angkor |

This exhibit remains admission free through the membership support of people like you!
Artist Binh Danh was born in Vietnam in 1977, two years after the fall of Saigon, and in 1979 he and his family left their country and eventually reached the United States. The experience inspired him to create artwork exploring time and memory. “This series ... continues my exploration of the photographic process. Photography has allowed me to mediate on death and its influence on the living. The themes of mortality, memory, history, landscape justice, evidence and spirituality encompass this [work],” states the artist.

Poe’s Playground is a collection of work inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s life, his art and the places he haunted during his lifetime. Poe's stories inspire artists to examine the creepy, melancholy and frightening. Poe's Playground features works by Caryl Burtner, Jamie Burwell Mixon, Mark Chatterley, Kathryn Henry–Choisser, John Moser, Amie Oliver, Noah Scalin and Chris Semtner. This exhibit was organized by 1708 Gallery in Richmond, VA.
Also featuring portraits of the women who were part of Edgar Allan Poe's life and who inspired his work. The original acrylic paintings in this exhibit were created by internationally exhibited artist and Poe Museum Curator Chris Semtner. Among the pieces in the show are portraits of Poe’s wife/cousin Virginia Clemm Poe; Jane Stanard, his “first purely ideal love” who went insane when Poe was a child; Elmira Royster Shelton, the woman to whom Poe was twice engaged; and Mary Rogers, the cigar girl whose murder inspired Poe’s story “The Mystery of Marie Roget.” This exhibit is on loan from the Poe Museum in Richmond, VA.

| Works in Wood by Tony Williams and Thomas Johnson |
Jan 15 through Feb 26, 2011 - Hooker Garrett Gallery
This exhibit remains admission free through the membership support of people like you!
Tony Williams uses furniture as a canvas. He creates images without using stains or paints. Instead, he uses the natural colors and grain of exotic woods to create texture and dimension in his work. Embedding images into furniture results in pieces that are functional and beautiful.
Before coming to America in 1993, Thomas Johnson was a scholarship student at the prestigious woodworking institute in Rimini, Italy. There he was given the opportunity to work under the tutelage of world–renowned furniture makers. Much of Johnson's work is done by using traditional machinery, tools and methods such as dowel; mortise; tongue and groove construction; and precision hand–sanding and hand–rubbed finishing. He uses only the finest hardwoods and finishing products in his work.
