The Lynwood Artists Gallery features work by Colby Cline, a calligrapher, woodworker, and graphic designer based in Martinsville, Virginia.
Cline began his practice in 2018 with a handful of hand-turned penholders made in his parents' basement. He was driven by a desire to master the craft of penmanship through creating his own tools.
What began as a personal pursuit has become a practice grounded in traditional woodworking techniques and informed by the study of historic writing instruments. His work reflects a commitment to creating objects intended for both daily use and lasting preservation.
Each of his works is accompanied by a hand-drawn bird flourish as a gesture of gratitude, honoring those who have shared their knowledge, encouragement, and support.
Cline studied graphic design at Radford University. He works from his home studio and Studio 107 in uptown Martinsville.
The Lynwood Artists Gallery is curated by Lynwood Artists, an organization for practicing artists in the Martinsville-Henry County area. Its members share a desire to stimulate understanding and enjoyment of fine art and the artistic process, while providing area artists with opportunities to exhibit and further develop their talents.
